Recommended Settings

To call internationally from home, you don't need to do anything! Simply use the Truphone Anywhere default settings that come as standard.

You will typically be using bundled minutes, (assuming you haven't exceeded your bundle) plus Truphone's low rates for international calls, typically saving 17p-127p/minute for calls to international landlines and 5p-110p/min for calls to mobiles.

Your specific settings:

Recommended Settings

The general rule for using Truphone Anywhere for UK pay-as-you-go contracts is if you pay significantly more than 15p/min for local calls (Truphone's current rate for a call back to a UK mobile), turn call through off and call back on (e.g. if you pay 20p/min and 10p/text, call back is cheaper for calls of more than 2 minutes).

Your settings for call-back:

If you pay 15p/min or less for local calls, use the default Truphone Anywhere settings that come as standard. This can work especially well for contracts that have low rates in the evenings and weekends (e.g. Orange Canary) if used at those times.

You will typically be paying up to 15p/min plus Truphone's low international rates for international calls (plus the cost of a single UK text message per call if using call back), and saving 5-85p/minute for calls to international landlines.

Recommended Settings

If you have a calling plan that gives you a low rate across the whole country (for example, Rogers One Rate or Telus Talk Canada) then the default settings are fine.

If, as is more common, your calling plan only gives you low cost or 'free' bundled calls in the local calling area, and your local calling area is not the same as the Truphone Anywhere callthrough number, then we recommend that you turn call back on and call-through off. To do this, go Truphone > Options > Settings > Anywhere > Advanced settings > Call back on, and Call through off.

To check the area of the callthrough number go Truphone > Options > What's my > Call through number.

If you have a long distance favourite number deal (e.g. Rogers MY5 Long Distance) another option is to make the Truphone Anywhere callthrough number one of these numbers (if your operator allows this) and use it in the default call-through mode.

To use Truphone Anywhere for long distance calls in Canada (and for calling to the USA), set it to ask you for all calls and manually select 'Truphone Anywhere' for long distance calls and 'GSM' for local calls. To do this, go Truphone > Options > Settings > Anywhere > Advanced settings > Redirect when > All calls (and also check that 'Ask for call type' is set to 'Always ask').

Rogers Canada Mega Value Plans:
This call could cost you: C$1.24/min
So a 10 minute call at this rate would cost = C$12.40

Truphone Anywhere cost: C$0.20 for signalling SMS to US, C$0.00/min to receive cellular call (if in bundle), US$0.06/min for Truphone callback, US$0.06/min call to Brazil. Total = C$0.20 + US$1.20 (note that this would be the same cost for a call to a landline in any country in the 40-country Tru Zone)

Fido Canada Monthly Packages:

Truphone Anywhere has local call-through numbers in at least 30 countries. You can check if your country has a call through number by going to Truphone > Options > What's my > Call through number. If you have a local call through number you could be using bundled or low cost minutes for international calls, check your calling plan for details.

You can check the list of call-through countries here. If your country is on this list, you can try Truphone > options > repair account to reload the list of call-through numbers. If your country is not on this list then consider turning call back on (Truphone > Options > Settings > Anywhere > Advanced settings > Call back > On). This will still result in savings in most countries, especially where international call charges are high.

Customers in Canada

Unless you have a long-distance calling plan within Canada you should probably turn Truphone Anywhere off. (Truphone > Options > Settings > Anywhere off). You can check whether the Truphone access number is in your local calling area by going Truphone > what's my > call-through number. If so, you will probably still be able to save money on international calls by leaving Truphone Anywhere on.

Consider switching on Call back and setting Truphone Anywhere to "redirect when abroad".

If in doubt check the cost of dialled vs received calls in the region you are travelling to. If the cost of calling exceeds the cost of receiving calls by more than 30p / 60c per minute you can make savings with Truphone Anywhere for most calls. Note that this is generally NOT the case for customers from North America and for Western Europe customers calling Western European numbers.

Using a local SIM card

If you have local SIM cards for those countries that you regularly travel to, you can still use Truphone Anywhere call-through (the default settings that come as standard) to save money in many cases when calling back to your home country.

Recommended Settings

If you are thinking about an international calling plan and haven't yet subscribed, Truphone Anywhere can be a good alternative and you will also save the monthly subscription for an international calling plan (typically £2.50 or $3.99/month).

If you have already subscribed to a plan the additional savings with Truphone Anywhere can still be significant especially for calls to landlines if your operator does not make the distinction between landlines and mobiles in their charges. Recommended Settings

Mobile operators offer an incredibly wide variety of tariffs in different countries so it is difficult to say definitively whether you will save money in your personal circumstances.

However, you can save money on calling internationally from home and many people can make big savings when roaming as well.
